The Southern Gothic genre is based upon supernatural or unordinairy events to guide the plot. The stories almost always have some sort of ironic storyline. Southern gothic was often used to gain attention for the social issues in the south during that time.It was horror fiction for the shallow reader but if you look closer you can find an underlying message.

Southern gothic is a genre coming from the English gothic genre. The stories are written during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Southern gothic is almost always written by writers who lived in the South during that time. The stories are known for the horrible events that take place and ofcourse because it is all set in the South. The main characters are often in pain, whether they are mentally ill or physically. In the Southern gothic genre you can often find a  scapegoat which the village usually turn against. Something which makes the reader feel relieved and repulsed. it is not uncommon that the scapegoat is in fact not very likable there for it is not such a bad thing if he or she dies. Repulsed because the way the character dies is horrible.

The reason why we chose this theme is because we really enjoyed looking for the hidden symbols and underlying messages. We also liked 'The lottery' a lot which made us interested in the darker side of the writers and the theme in general. The stories also tell us about the American south and the people who lived there. You get a certain feeling from the stories as if you are there with the main characters.
